【Hawaii school trip – sea and sky】
Aloha!

Today, we first visited the Mokupapapa Discovery Center, where we sorted through the contents of what a baby albatross had vomited. Among their food, we found numerous man-made objects like plastic and fishing nets. Surprisingly, not only bottle caps but even toothbrushes were present, meaning the birds had eaten them. Seeing this, I hope our students will broaden their awareness of nature and reflect on their actions.

Next, we divided into two groups. One was led by Mr. Takayama, as he mentioned earlier, while the other group enjoyed the richness of the sea through snorkeling. We saw various kinds of fish, including a sea snake, and some of our students were lucky enough to spot a sea turtle—though I didn’t. I’ve uploaded some videos so you can watch and enjoy the underwater world too.

After returning to the hotel, we tried to gaze at the stars. Unfortunately, clouds covered most of the sky, so we couldn’t see much. The students were disappointed, but I wasn’t. Do you know why? I believed the sky would eventually clear, so I stayed awake past midnight, and finally, I succeeded in seeing a sky full of stars! Here’s a picture I took from my balcony. You can see the beautiful Orion constellation and the Winter Triangle. I think the bright star in the upper left of Orion is Jupiter, but I’m not completely sure. If anyone knows, please let me know!

【ハワイ修学旅行 – 海と空】

アロハ！

今日はまず、モクパパパ・ディスカバリーセンターを訪れ、そこで若いアホウドリが吐き出した内容物を調べました。その食べ物の中には、プラスチックや釣り糸など多くの人工物が含まれていました。驚いたことに、ボトルのキャップだけでなく、歯ブラシまでもが見つかり、鳥たちがそれを食べてしまっていたのです。これを見て、生徒たちには自然への意識を広げ、行動を見つめ直してほしいと感じました。

次に、2つのグループに分かれました。1つは高山先生の先導によるグループで、もう1つのグループはスノーケリングを通して海の豊かさを満喫しました。様々な種類の魚やウミヘビを見て、一部の生徒は幸運にもウミガメに出会うことができました。残念ながら私は見ることができませんでしたが、海中の世界を楽しめるよう動画をいくつかアップしました。

ホテルに戻った後、星空を見上げようとしましたが、あいにくほとんどの空が雲に覆われてしまい、あまり見ることができませんでした。生徒たちは残念がっていましたが、私はそうではありませんでした。なぜか分かりますか？私は空がいずれ晴れると信じて、真夜中過ぎまで起きていたのです。そしてついに、満天の星空を見ることができました！バルコニーから撮った写真をお見せします。美しいオリオン座と冬の大三角形が見えます。オリオン座の左上の明るい星は木星だと思いますが、確信はありません。誰か知っている人がいたら教えてくださいね！
